she’ll hit you with her kookumaka stick!
Week 3:
Butch: The What-Nots - You Play Glockenspiel, I’ll Play Drums — This week’s song is a cover of The Beautiful South’s “You Play Glockenspiel, I’ll Play Drums” by Santa Cruz, California band The What-Nots.
The Beautiful South have covered songs by lots of different artists since 1990, but this may be the first cover of a Beautiful South song. The original can be found on their 1992 album O898 BEAUTIFUL SOUTH, but this version is arguably better. It’s worth downloading just to hear the “power chords”. Enjoy.
John: Asian Dub Foundation - Culture Move. One of the great musical innovations of the 90’s is drum and bass music. I am fascinated by it–ask my wife! Something comes over me whenever I hear those thinly sliced breakbeats.
I also lurve hybrid music (the blending of musical styles; see Beck’s 1996 album ODELAY for a good example of this), which is why I went crazy over this track by Asian Dub Foundation, a UK band that doubles as a political/social activist group. ADF has taken the “chocolate” of Jamaican toasting, and dumped it into the “peanut butter” of drum and bass. Mmmmmmm - two great tastes that taste great together. Thanks to Pete Crook for passing this CD along to me, even if he wasn’t aware that he had.
