Futurama: It Sure Ain’t No Simpsons
Week 4 de los Wayback Machine:
John: Throwing Muses - An Intimate Conversation. Over the weekend, I got out my little turntable and some records that haven’t been played in awhile, and attempted to digitize some stuff for you, the hypothetical reader/listener.
This is a silly little spoken word piece from what used to be my favorite American band (before they broke up in 1997), Throwing Muses. Admittedly lo-fi and definitely not intended for general release, it features lead singer Kristin Hersh and her drummer telling the story of Pike, a girl with some family troubles. They both provide the sound effects as well.
(Note: 90% of the pops on this file come from the source recording, not my vinyl and lousy turntable.)
Butch: Pink Floyd - The Fletcher Memorial Home. I’ve been pissed off since Monday, when I heard that George Bush has joined Margaret Thatcher and the Pope in calling for that goddamn murdering thug Augusto Pinochet to be returned to Chile, rather than face extradition from the UK to Spain. I’m not at all surprised that Bush would take such a position, of course, but I’m still disgusted. I guess “world leaders” recognize their common interests and the need for solidarity within their elite little club.
Anyway, given the above, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate song than this. I recorded it from vinyl 16 years ago, and I’ve listened to the cassette over a hundred times since then, so it doesn’t sound as clean as it otherwise might. But it’s good enough for our purposes here, and it’s certainly better (both in terms of quality and content) than the crap John is peddling this week. 4AD bands suck shit — that’s all there is to it.
Ed note: He’s wrong about 4AD bands, of course. At least from 1983 - 1993 or so.
