We’re Pretty - Pretty Vacant
More mp3 time travels, as we continue with the John & Butch series:
Butch: Phil Ochs - Joe Hill (live in Montreal) — I was going to continue the Pinochet-is-a-murdering-thug theme from last week by featuring a couple of songs by Victor Jara. But then I went to see the movie SLC Punk over the weekend. It sucked like no other film I’ve seen in recent years. It was supposedly made by an ex-punk, and it purports to be a look into the Salt Lake City underground of 1985. Bullshit. It’s a shallow treatment of the punk movement which has the effect of making them all look like clueless teenagers who had no real understanding of anarchism and were simply participating in a fashion fad. While I think that’s largely true of most people who called themselves “punks” in 1985, I don’t think it was true of the group in question (some of whom I know). Fucking movie industry — trying to rewrite/whitewash history and disempower people.
So instead of Victor Jara (and in response to that crappy movie) this week I’m offering a song about a true Salt Lake City rebel, written by another genuine rebel. Thanks to Pam Raver for the recording (Montreal, 22 October 1966).
John: Robyn Hitchcock - Green Storm Lantern (live) — I’ve received a few emails lately from people, basically saying, “You’re are a big Robyn Hitchcock fan….you even run a Robyn Hitchcock web site ! And yet, no Robyn songs yet on this page?”
So, here’s a selection from last year’s “Storefront Hitchcock” album, which happens to be the soundtrack from the live concert film of the same name, directed by legendary director Jonathan Demme (”Silence Of The Lambs”, “Philadelphia”). The vinyl version of the album features different stories, versions of songs, and extra songs not included on the cd. This particular cut happens to be one of those extra songs.
You’ll hear Robyn talking to Jonathan Demme (”J.D.”) at the beginning of the track.
