John: X - The Unheard Music
“There’s laughing outside/ We’re locked out of the public eye
Some smooth chords on the car radio/ No hard chords
On the car radio…..” -X
And with those words X described the music scene as it was circa 1980. And in many ways it is the same old thing happening today. For the most part, radio is out there peddling cotton-candy popcrap, and for every Matchbox 20 there are a hundred bands out there saying something more exciting or (gasp!) important, bands which you will most likely never hear because radio is too busy giving you what it thinks you want.
X was a band that wriggled out from among all the labels. They played alongside all the L.A. punk bands, they borrowed much from the hardcore scene, but they had a sense of art which those hardcore bands were lacking. (And lord knows where they came up with those harmonies!!)
