I Will No Longer Do The Devil’s Dishes

SPOON, 07 DEC 05, CRYSTAL BALLROOM

Yesterday, I called my friend Butch up. “I’m going to see Spoon tonight,” I told him.

“I’ve never heard of them,” he said. “What do they sound like?”

“Hmmmm, kind of power poppy indie rockey, but that could describe anyone I guess. I’ll try to put an mp3 up that is representative of their work.”

Spoon - The Beast And Dragon Adored

But that’s not really representative, is it? I went into the show last night only familiar with their latest album “Gimme Fiction” (and a song from their previous one called “The Way We Get By” which I heard first on KPSU) and realized I have much to learn about this band. My favorite songs of the evening were indeed the groove-based tunes from “Gimme Fiction” - the ones with the jaunty piano lines and the jagged white noise leads. But they also played blistering pop-punk numbers, some long moody pieces (one of them - “Paper Tiger” - had me thinking of The Cure circa 1984 for some reason - heavy on the tribal tom toms), and even a straight ahead ballad. Singer Britt Daniel mentioned from the stage that they’d come quite a long ways from their early touring days in Portland — evidently they played EJ’s a number of times in the mid to late 90’s.

The show was thoroughly enjoyable. I even enjoyed some of the opening act Crosstide. Their last song of the night (which I’m told is their big alterna-hit on NRK) featured some great lines from The Smiths’ “Boy With The Thorn In His Side”. Are those lines featured in the actual studio/radio/cd version? I hope so.

Disclaimer: The above picture is not from last night’s show. If you have a picture from last night’s show, I’d love to put it here. Email me: jbj at mix me a molotov dotte calm.

Updated: “Gimme Fiction” and its brilliance in 75 words or less.
