You Come Around Looking 1984
I had this clever post all thought up about Colin Meloy, Prince, and major label deals, but its so yesterday already. Besides, its so un-indie these days to cry SELL OUT. So I’ll save my rancor for fall of next year when Capitol sends out CEASE and DESIST letters to fans listening to advance copies of The Decemberists’ new cd (suggested retail: $24.99).
As I sit here in the PDX Airport, I’m reminded of a brush I had here with Corin Tucker (lead singer for Sleater-Kinney) in June of this year. I came out of the security checkpoint at the same time as she and Carrie did, and while Carrie browsed through the magazines at the nearby kiosk, I stopped Corin and told her how much I love her band, and how much I appreciate the work that she and Carrie had been doing at the Rock N Roll Camp For Girls. She just stared at me the entire time (I imagined her thinking that I was not in her band’s demographic), and she didn’t say a word until I finished my moment of nervous adulation. Then she said “thanks” and she and her bandmate were off to wherever.
I deliberately left out “The Woods” when talking to her, because I happened to be right in the middle of “trying to like it” and not succeeding very well. (You know how Carrie sneers about the bands that are trying so hard to be new wave on the “Entertain” single? I feel the same way about their “classic rock” sound). But no sooner had I walked away from them that I realized I hadn’t gushed to them about “Jumpers”. Oh no! Damn! Damn! “Jumpers” is strange magic - easily the best song on that album, and quite possibly one of the best songs in their catalog.

[...] Okay, you’ll quickly find a theme here to all these releases, a thread that was definitely unintended. That is, all these favorites of mine find the artists dipping their foot into more commercial waters. Things are much more polished than on previous releases. Fans of all the above bands have been doing some complaining about each of these new releases. Believe me, I’m the first to cry sell out (even when it is not popular). But as Woody Allen once said, “the heart wants what it wants…there’s no logic to these things.” These are the albums that I’ve been coming back to again and again this year, indie cred be damned.
