Rats In The Junkyard

norway rats at indie ruckus 2006

Casey Neill & The Norway Rats, 29 Apr 2006, Mighty Ruckus Festival, Bay Area Motor Club, San Francisco, CA setlist: Bluetar Road / We Are The City / Throw Me To The Dogs / Storyline / She Floated Away (Husker Du) / Lowground / Memory Against Forgetting / Raleigh & Spencer / It Won’t Hurt (Dwight Yoakam) / Riff Raff

It’s a goofy little pleasure, but I get a kick out of seeing favorite local songwriters play live in other cities. My work takes me out of town fairly often; I happened to be in the Bay Area when Casey Neill and his newly-named band The Norway Rats played in the most unusual venue I’ve ever experienced a concert in: a warehouse full of junker cars.

The set was as punk as you can possibly get from Casey, but elicited very little physical response from the crowd. Me — I was having a hard time standing still. I started to get that twitch — the one that comes from feeling the energy coming off the stage and having no place to put it. I wanted to start thrashing around, but it would’nt have been pretty, middle-age man dancing with himself. So I stayed put too. We missed out.
