Sex, Food, Death, Insects…..And God.
I’m always looking for ways to connect my two favorite songwriters: Dan Bern and Robyn Hitchcock. Somewhere amongst my rock and roll papers I have a poster that my wife brought me home from a trip to France in 2003. The poster is for a Dan Bern and the IJBC gig, but features a Robyn Hitchcock quote on it (!): “Dan Bern has alot of interesting things to say about God.”
Today’s post finds yet another connection in the form of Jonathan Demme. Movies like “Silence of the Lambs” and “Stop Making Sense” made him famous, but he has also been a big supporter of Robyn Hitchcock, making a live concert film of him in 1997 (”Storefront Hitchcock”) and casting him as a baddie in his remake of “The Manchurian Candidate”. An interview last week in the Washington Post plants Demme firmly in the Dan Bern fan club:
Q: You’ve always had great music in your movies. Name some songs on your iPod “most played” list.
A: Scribble down this name for me: Dan Bern. Breathe. He wrote “The Ballad of Jimmy Carter” for the movie (”Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains”). There’s another title of his, please listen to it: Jerusalem. Then you can turn your kids on to these songs.
Dan Bern - The Ballad Of Jimmy Carter
