The Many Faces Of Jenny Conlee

Friday, February 1st, 2008

When not appearing in indie music videos, Jenny Conlee can be seen rocking the pipe organ at McMenamin’s Chapel Of The Chimes pub in North Portland (AKA my hood) on Thursdays in February from 7:30-9:30pm.
She’s also accompanying Casey Neill tomorrow night up in Olympia, WA at a venue called Plenty.
Oh, and she’s also in The [...]

The Decemberists Are Back!

Friday, December 14th, 2007

Nice to hear from The Decemberists! This fall they cancelled both a European tour and a stateside tour, citing illness. And then they kind of went dark. Chris and Nate have popped up on the message board from time to time to make small announcements, but for the most part the D’s camp went silent. [...]

The Five Percent Nation Of The 2/3rds

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

School starts in a few days, and that marks an end of summery things. Fall is coming and with it typically comes an avalanche of new releases. So before we get hit with the deluge, I’m gonna take a few minutes here and talk about six favorite albums that came out in the first two-thirds [...]

Spring Cleaning In Summer

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I’ll be the first to admit that this mp3 blog doesn’t serve up nearly enough mp3s.
I have a few theories as to why this is so, but I’d say reason numbero uno is that blog posts spend more time in my head than in my text editor. And by the time I actually make [...]

Laura Veirs: new song and album!

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

We interrupt my blog-in-hiding to bring you good news.
Laura Veirs has posted the lead-off track (”Pink Light”) from her forthcoming record on her myspace page.
http://www.myspace.com/lauraveirs
The album cover is also there — deep purple cover with cool sea drawings.
The song is stunning — if you liked “Year Of Meteors” album then I believe you are [...]

The Album Project

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

I’ve just finished year two of a very geeky project: listening to as many of the year’s releases as I can, picking a favorite song from each, and creating an mp3 sampler CD-R with those songs. 2006’s disc features 142 songs, from Alejandro Escovedo’s “Arizona” to Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ “Phenomena”.
Here’s the first third of the [...]

Year-End Wrapup: Top 14 albums.

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

10 days and this year is over.
I’m proud (and sickened) to say that I listened to over 120 albums this year. And I mean REALLY listened to them. Enough to pick a song I liked best from each one.
I narrowed 120+ albums to 14 favorites. Why 14? Because that’s how many mp3 albums would fit [...]

More John Vecchiarelli

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

I want to do a writeup of last night’s big event, but for now here’s a great article that appeared last Friday in the Portland Tribune. It says it all so well, and includes some great quotes from folks like Pete Krebs, Rachel Taylor Brown, and Alan Kanning.
